DRDO has provided 1.5 billion dollars for the Project-18 from it's total annual budget. The project aims to introduced the worlds most highly advanced Destroyer.
Project-18 : India's Next Generation Destroyer
In Navy, Destroyer's is a large vessel that can able to fast maneuverable and long-endurence Warship which protect the large Aircraft carriers from the enemy Submarine and Destroyers. Now project-18 is India's next Generation Destroyer which will be equipped with advance Weapons and Radar systems. With the joint venture of Kakinda shipyard, Mazgaon docks and L&T will lay keel for the Destroyer that will have a displacement of 9000 tonnes.
Fire power:
Project-18 class Destroyers not only equipped with Ballistic missiles and Hypersonic Bramhos-II but also equipped with advanced Weapons like Electromagnetic Railguns and laser-based (CIWS) close-in weapon systems.
The Electromagnetic Railgun and Laser-based CIWS:
Indian defence scientists have developed Electromagnetic Railguns (EMRG) that can successfully fire projectiles at 4,600 miles per hours. The more bigger version of that Railgun placed in this Warship. The Warship will be also deployed with a 300 kw Laser Based CIWS and a additional 100 kw Laser Based weapon systems with faster charging rates and continuous rate of application that can able to operate for closer Warfare.
This type of Destroyers will be able to carry a single Anti-Submarine helicopter , UCAV's and UAV's,with a advance compact version of EMALS(Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System).
Of all those carrying and Launching capability makes it a Light Aircraft Carrier.
Radar Systems:
With the joint venture of DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited(BEL) will be designed and developed the next generation radar system, that will be equipped in to this platform. In the meanwhile the already developed AMDS(Autonomous Mine Detection System), and both Active and passive Electronically Scanned Array (AESA and PESA) with extended range, and also possible merger into one multi-band radar equipped into this Destroyer. The Destroyer also have an x-Band optronic mast detector radar.
Power Source:
All the futuristic Weapons(EMRG & CIWS) , Radar Systems and Propulsion (Integrated Electric Propulsion) system draws a massive amount of power from the two 36 MW Gas Turbine, in conjugation with 2 diesel generators of 10 MW each and 2 electric propulsion motors of 20 MW. Propulsion Motors and Diesel Generators will be desigend and developed by TASL(Tata Advanced System Ltd).DRDO and L&T will further developed the GATET program for marine propulsion.
